What type of DSLR Camera should I buy?
These days there is a wealth of DSLR cameras to choose from so how do you choose which one is best for you?
If you’re just venturing into getting your first DSLR camera and intend to do photography as a hobby then there is no reason to go and spend a lot of money on a mid or top of the range camera. If however, you are considering taking your photography to a higher level and will be using your camera a lot then spending more on a camera will be a great investment.
Entry-level DSLR cameras:
These are available from Canon, Nikon, Sony and Olympus. All their cameras provide great capabilities and would be suitable for the amateur and enthusiast. Prices start from around £300 and would typically include a 18-55mm kit lens. Prices range from £300 – £500. Ideal for the Beginners Course and the Portrait & Lighting course
Intermediate DSLR cameras:
If you are looking to upgrade your camera or are considering earning some money from your camera then I would recommend choosing a mid range DSLR camera from either a Canon or Nikon. As well as the exceptional quality provided both these manufacturers allow you to move onwards to the professional range without you having to replace lenses that you will have purchased. Prices, including a better quality kit lens start at around £650 – £1,500. Suitable for all the courses
Professional DSLR Cameras:
This is for the more serious photography enthusiast or for those who earn, or want to earn, an income from photography. Again, I would suggest Canon or Nikon as your choice. Although these cameras provide exceptional quality and range of functions, just buying one won’t make you a better photographer unless you know how to use it! Expect to pay from £2,000 to £4,500+ for the camera body only. Suitable for all the courses
Finally:
Which brand of camera is best for you really depends on what feels best for you. If possible buy from a shop and that way you can feel the camera in your hand, try out the navigation and simply see which one you prefer.

Hi Jeff
My wife has an Olympus E-PM1 (with two lenses), which has never been out of the box.
She is looking to learn how to use the camera, and we wondered if your beginners course would be suitable?
She has limited mobility, so too much outdoor work would be difficult.
Many thanks
Peter
